What is this?

Double bind acts as a form of constraint in which a person is caught between two conflicting expectations or sets of rules, such that to obey either would be to transgress the other. This form of constraint has a detrimental effect on the person's autonomy and communication as ultimately each person is left to navigate a dilemma without any viable solution, subsequently impacting the health of both long-term relationships and overall psychological wellbeing.
